The Four Tools That Matter
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot. What each one is genuinely best at, when to reach for which, and why the choice matters less than you think.
The big four AI assistants get compared like rival sports teams, but here's the honest truth: they're far more alike than different. Any of them will handle the vast majority of everyday work well. Pick one, get comfortable, and don't agonize.
That said, each has a personality and a few strengths worth knowing.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
The one most people have heard of, and a great all-rounder. Strong at brainstorming, writing, coding, and a huge range of tasks, with the widest set of extra features and a massive user base—so help is easy to find. If you want a safe first pick, this is it.
Claude (Anthropic)
Known for thoughtful, natural writing and careful reasoning over long documents. Many people prefer its tone for emails, drafts, and explanations, and it's comfortable working with large amounts of pasted text. A favorite for writing-heavy and analysis work.
Gemini (Google)
Built by Google and tightly connected to the things Google does well—search and the Workspace apps like Docs, Gmail, and Sheets. If your day lives inside Google's tools, Gemini sits closest to where you already work.
Copilot (Microsoft)
Microsoft's assistant, woven into Windows and Office. Its strength is location: if you spend your day in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams, Copilot is right there in the ribbon, ready to help without switching apps.
How to actually choose
Don't overthink it. Use the one already in the tools you live in—Google's apps point to Gemini; Microsoft's, Copilot; neither, start with ChatGPT or Claude. The skill of prompting transfers completely between them. Learn to ask well on one and you can drive any of them.
The tools are more similar than the marketing suggests. Pick the one closest to where you already work, and put your energy into how you ask—that's what transfers.
